Dry stone walling in Central Park

Earlier this month, our Green Communities team joined up with the Devon Rural Skills Trust in Cental Park. Together, they taught 23 people the traditional skill of dry-stone walling and stone facing, whilst building 6 metres of dry-stone wall.

This work is a continuation of the walling repairs completed last year in the park, along Gilbert Lane. Having Devon banks in an urban park means we can make rural skills more accessible to those who wouldn't necessarily normally get involved.

From the 23 people involved, only 6 people had tried walling before. The opportunity was offered as a thank you for those people who have been involved in the Green Communities project over the last year.

People involved Plymouth City Council staff, from gardeners, tree planters to Plymouth Sound National Marine Park rangers, and people in the local community like allotment holders and association members, staff and volunteers from Improving Lives Plymouth , and other Saltram, National Trust rangers.

This practice takes time and skill, and everyone involved did a fantastic job- thank you!
