Getting creative at St Budeaux and Barne Barton Wellbeing Hub!

Although Christmas is just around the corner, the gardening group at St Budeaux and Barne Barton Wellbeing Hub has already set their sights on Spring. With the help of the Green Communities rangers, the keen gardeners got creative making trellises and planters in preparation for the warmer months.

The group learnt a variety of willow weaving techniques, creating incredible natural trellises. These will take pride of place in the Hub's polytunnel, ready to support climbing plants such as tomatoes, cucumbers and peas in the springtime. Once mastered, the basic weaving skills can be applied to almost any project - endless inspiration! The gardening group are hoping to use their new skills to make more trellises in future or try their hand at round obelisks for sweet peas.

Together we then prepared 'bulb lasagnes'. This technique layers different varieties of bulbs such as tulips, daffodils and crocuses all in the same pot. Each layer of bulbs will bloom at different times from February to June, meaning that colourful flowers can be enjoyed throughout the whole of Spring by both pollinators and people. We topped the planters with violas to give them a splash of colour over winter before the bulbs emerged.

Despite the colder weather and darker days, there is still plenty of creative projects to be getting on with in the garden, so that you are ready to spring into action for the next growing season!

Thank you to the Great Escape gardening group and everyone who attended. Thank you also to the Wellbeing Hub for providing a delicious soup lunch made with home-grown produce from the Hub's garden.
