Growing Skills in Knowle Avenue Allotments!
The Green Communities team is working alongside Generous Earth and an ecologist to grow allotment skills with local people in Keyham!
Together, we are supporting thirteen residents on the waiting list for an allotment. Through a six week course, we will be sharing knowledge on how to prepare, design, plant, and manage an allotment space, using an empty plot to put the learning into practice.
Over these six sessions, we are guiding the group through low-cost, sustainable methods for gardening, like the 'no dig' approach, and supporting residents with composting and water capture systems. We are promoting nature-friendly growing methods and low-cost sustainable systems, learning how to choose, propagate, and care for plants to support a good harvest.
The course is a brilliant way for local people to gain new skills, build confidence and join a community of like-minded allotment-holders who can support the growing journey. Not only is it a space where they have been connecting with nature, but they are also learning techniques which will help nature to thrive in their future allotments!
We would also like to thank our colleagues from across Plymouth City Council, who have supported our efforts. Michael and Lukasz from Street Services have provided Green Communities with bins to keep woodchip dry for composting, and the allotment team have provided invaluable advice and practical support.
We hope to continue the workshops in other areas of the city so watch this space...
