Stone facing in Central Park

Last week, an instructor from the Devon Rural Skills Trust came to Central Park to train staff from Green Communities, Plymouth Natural Grid, Plymouth Sound National Marine Park and Plymouth and South Devon Community Forest's Forest Rising group in stone facing!

Stone facing is an ancient technique, using stone to create a solid face along an earth bank. It shares many of the principles of dry-stone walling but uses soil to pack in behind the stone work. The soil used was from the Central Park composting project!

Over the week, we repaired 8 meters of the bank next to the Life Centre and trained 15 people. These hedge banks are estimated to be between 500-600 years old and would have made up the original farm boundaries before the land was changed into a park.

As well as upskilling our teams, this opportunity also ensured the preservation of some of the key heritage features in Central Park!
