Arts University Plymouth students at Saltram House

BA Illustration Students' Work

Nature connection and rewilding was incorporated into the curriculum learning process for BA Illustration students through their work with the National Trust team at Saltram House.

It started with the whole course taking part in a site visit to learn about Saltram, rewilding, and Saltram’s needs. From this, the students undertook research, made sketches, and pieced together ideas, then formed into groups to pitch interpretation design proposals to the Saltram team. The groups worked like design agencies, consulting with ‘client’ through the process. Work has now been installed on site and you can see the wonderful work of the students below.

Green Minds coordinator at Arts University Plymouth, Chris Smith said: 'So impressed with the work our BA Illustration Arts University Plymouth did for Saltram House, National Trust, to help them inform the public about their rewilding work on the estate (part of a Green Minds project). One group focussed on creating digital assets for a website (Abi Brown, Aidan Mills, Jacob Judd and Lucy Ward) and the other group focussed on creating the artwork for the rewilding interpretation boards being installed on site. (Lucy Hartman, Hannah Harvey, Claudia Minelli, Archie McKenzie, Susan Marsden, Jasmine Stewart and Wyatt Harris). The estate staff were absolutely delighted with the work, and our students did us proud with their professionalism and skills. I'd happily work with any one, or all of these students again!'

BA Textiles Students' Work

The BA Textiles course ran this collaborative project with Saltram which was about design inspiration and exploration - they visited the gardens, collection and rewilding areas, had a drawing workshop on site and then produced experimental designs, sketches, prints and textile swatches in response. Although experimental work, it was exhibited both at Saltram House as part of the ‘Festival of Flowers’, and at Arts University Plymouth.
