Launching the third year of Next Generation Nature schools programme!

Green Communities have just started the third year of our Next Generation Nature Schools’ Programme: a partnership project with the National Trust. We deliver Climate Education sessions to schools, youth groups, and colleges around Plymouth. We support a diverse range of children and young people in their own neighbourhoods, aiming to help young people and their families feel more connected to their neighbourhood and to each other.

On a rather rainy Wednesday in February, we delivered a composting session in Devonport Park for students at St Joseph’s Catholic Primary school. We taught students about the Ridan hot composting system in Devonport (we welcome you to drop off your food scraps at any time), and how composting is such a wonderful way to use our waste to enrich soil and create environmental sustainability. The children used compost to plant a herb garden for the park, and created their own micro-compost systems in jars, ready to observe the decomposition process at school.

We will be visiting the students again in March to create a wormery and support the school to develop their own composting system, empowering young people to use their new skills and learning to reduce food waste and grow lovely, organic vegetables onsite.

Special thanks to the team at Ballard House who facilitated collecting food waste from the office and thank you to our colleagues at Ballard House: your food waste contributed to the session!
