Our Nature Data

This page shows some of the data we are already collecting in or around green and blue spaces in Plymouth. We will keep adding to it over time, and hope you give us your suggestions for what new data you would like to see here.

Soon we plan to have a dashboard highlighting some of the interesting data about the parks. What would you like to see on the Dashboard? Let us know here: greenminds@plymouth.ac.uk.

How we gather and measure data

We have installed a series of sensors using a technology platform alled LoRaWAN.

LoRa is the abbreviation of "Long Range Wide Area" and is a low-power wireless network platform- it allows sensors to send and receive data without an internet connection. It is designed to allow low-powered devices to communicate with In

ternet-connected applications over long range wireless connections. LoRaWan is is an open-source technology – it means anyone can use and access it and they don’t have to pay or ask permission. You can find out more at The Things network and the Plymouth community.

We are planning to install a whole range of sensors in the park. Currently the main sensors we are using is as follows:

  • mcf88 LoRaWAN Outdoor Environmental Sensor- This mcf88 LoRaWAN sensor is a multi-functional outdoor environmental sensor that transmits temperature, humidity and pressure with a battery life of up to five years.
  • mcf88 LoRaWAN Outdoor Particulate and Environmental Sensor
Sensor

This solar powered LoRaWAN sensor is a multi-functional outdoor environmental sensor that transmits temperature, humidity, pressure and particulate matter (PM1, PM2.5, PM10).

Central Park Pilot Live Nature Data

Currently we have a pilot project of 5 sensors in the park. This is where they are located:

So, what are we looking at here? Well, along the vertical line, we have the live sensor data such as temperature, humidity or pollution levels , and along the horizontal line, we have the time. We can see how the data changes according to the time of day and in relation to different locations.

Temperature in Plymouth at the moment

So, what are we looking at here? Well, along the vertical line, we have the temperature, and along the horizontal line, we have the time. We can see how the temperature goes up and down according to the time of day and any warm spells or cold snaps we might experience over 24 hours.
